Should I order twilight photography for my listing?

The short answer

Not for every listing. Twilight works when the property has something that only appears after dark — landscape lighting, a lit pool, a water view, glowing interiors seen from outside. If a home has none of that, a twilight shoot mostly produces a darker version of the same photograph. Every ADM package includes virtual twilight images, so you can get the look without a second visit; a genuine twilight session is part of Platinum.

What twilight is actually for

A twilight photograph works on contrast. The sky still holds colour while the house is lit from within and from the ground. That contrast is the whole effect. Where it exists, the image is genuinely striking. Where it does not, you get a dim exterior against a dark sky.

Homes that suit twilight

  • Landscape or architectural lighting that is already installed and working
  • A pool, spa or water feature with its own lighting
  • Large windows or sliders where warm interior light reads from outside
  • A water view, or a western aspect where the sky carries colour
  • Outdoor living space — a lit lanai, summer kitchen or fire feature

Homes that do not

If the exterior has no lighting beyond a porch fixture, if the landscaping is unlit, or if the house faces away from the evening sky, twilight has very little to work with. Nothing can light a house that has no lights.

Virtual twilight versus an Authentic Twilight Photography session

There are two ways to get the look, and they are not the same thing.

Two routes to a twilight image

How it is producedCreated from the daytime exterior photographsPhotographed on location at dusk
Second visit to the propertyNoYes
Captures the home's real lightingNoYes
Included withBase and abovePlatinum

Every package includes three virtual twilight images, starting with Base at $299. For many listings that is enough — it gives you a strong lead image without a second appointment. Platinum at $599 includes twilight photography and twilight video recorded at the property, which is what you want when the home's actual lighting is the selling point.

If you do book a twilight session

The result depends almost entirely on preparation, because the usable window is short.

  1. Turn on every interior light, including lamps, before we arrive
  2. Switch on landscape, pool and pathway lighting and replace anything that has failed
  3. Open blinds and curtains so the interior reads from outside
  4. Clear cars from the driveway and bins from view
  5. Tidy outdoor furniture and cushions on the lanai

We shoot around sunset, and the light changes minute by minute. A house that is still being switched on when the sky is at its best loses the window.

Common follow-up questions

Do I need twilight on every listing?
No. It suits homes with exterior lighting, a pool, a view or strong outdoor living space. On a home without those features it adds little.
What is the difference between virtual twilight and a twilight session?
Virtual twilight is created from the daytime exterior photographs and needs no extra visit. A twilight session is photographed on location at dusk and captures the home's real lighting. Virtual twilight images are included from Base; an on-location twilight session is part of Platinum.
How many twilight images do I get?
Every package includes three virtual twilight photographs. A separate twilight return visit delivers 8 edited exterior photographs: 3 aerial and 5 ground-level.
